Travel Beauty Tips – How To Stick With The Essentials

Arielle Benasillo
Arielle Benasillo is a 23 year old New Yorker who's passion for makeup is real. Growing up with both parents as hair stylists, the skill ran in the family. She recently graduated from Make Up Forever Academy New York certifying her in beauty & fashion, theatrical, special effects makeup and body painting. Arielle is now a freelance makeup artist working on photo shoots, weddings and events, as well as being employed at Salon S for makeup artistry. On her free time she enjoys traveling, being outdoors, froyo night with her roommates, and taking advantage of bottomless brunch in Manhattan with friends.

It’s vacation season — YAY! — and I’m notorious for packing way more than I use when I’m away. It’ll start off fine, but then I realize I have extra room in my duffel. That’s when I start grabbing random things off my shelves, justifying to myself that I might just need them.

I’m finally realizing this because I often travel solo. I am responsible for lifting my carry-on and hoisting it into the overhead storage, and that’s the only wake up call I needed. Lesson learned – pack light.

So to keep you all from stressing about what to take and what to leave behind, I put together a few of my favorites to travel with that I know will come in handy more than just one time. It’s all about the essentials!

While traveling, I like to give my skin a rest. I try to use a hydrating face mask and keep a moisturizing lip balm close by. I also like to keep it simple on days I’m sight-seeing, hiking or any activities/tours. Here are a few of the specifics:

1. A moisturizer (tint optional) with SPF

These are a two-in-one or a three-in-one trick. Why pack moisturizer, sunscreen and foundation when you can have one bottle that does the trick and doesn’t require you to layer a bunch of stuff on your skin?

My favorites are Dermalogica Oil Free Matte with SPF and Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer with SPF.

2. Concealer

I always need to wear concealer because of my dark circles, so I will never not pack it! Keeping your face makeup minimal on travel days (and possibly irregular sleeping patterns while you’re away) can result in tired eyes. Concealer will brighten the eyes and have you looking ready for whatever you have planned!

Favorites: Make Up Forever Lift Concealer and NARS creamy concealer.

Low budget? Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer in brightener is a good one too. At only $8.99, this option gives you some extra spending money for your trip too 😉

3. Brows

Your eyebrows frame the whole face. Personally, I choose to leave the brow kit behind, but I know that this is a big one for most of you – “Can’t go anywhere without my brows.”

Favorite: Anastasia Brow Pencil. It’s also double sided (spool and pencil), all about dat two-in-one!

4. Mascara

If I can only choose one makeup item to bring with me, it would be mascara ferrr sure. I’m also going to add my lash curler into this one, because they’re a package deal for me. Along with concealer, mascara brightens and opens my eyes up.

Favorite: Benefit They’re Real Mascara.

5. Blotting Papers

The water is always a little bit different than what you’re used to at home, so it usually results in your hair/skin being slightly different than the usual. Not to mention that you’re probably being active, out and about all day. I normally don’t have oily skin, but when I’m away I am always searching for some blotting papers to get rid of any excess oil on my skin.

Favorite: Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets for your local drugstore, and they’re under $5.

6. Powder

I am always using powder to keep my makeup shine-free. Powder also stops your makeup from sliding on your face and becoming a runny mess.

Just powder your face and under eyes after you apply your makeup, even if you only applied tinted moisturizer, it will help to keep your face matte all day long. For nice dinners or nights out I dress up more. Add one or two lipsticks to the mix, liner and blush, and you’re set for a night out!

Favorite: The Make Up For Ever Super Matte Loose Powder

7. Blush

This is another one I almost always travel with, especially for a night out when I need to add some fresh color back into my face.

Favorites: Nars Blush, Nars The Multiple (this one is really great because it’s a stick that has all kinds of uses – lip, cheek, highlighter, body – whatever!)

8. Eye Liner

Choose one color liner to bring with you: black, brown, blue, whatever color you wear most, and pack only that one.

Favorite: Stila Stay All Day Liquid Liner. Bonus – you won’t have to pack a sharpener!

9. Lipstick

First, If you don’t wear lipstick normally, or think you won’t be wearing lipstick on this trip, don’t pack it! If you do usually use lipstick, keep in mind the outfits you packed and try to come up with the most versatile color.

If you plan to pack two, then choose two that aren’t similar. I usually pack one nude, and one pop of color.

Favorite x 10: Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil. Its a lip pencil and a lipstick all in one… perfect for travel, amiright?
