If you were to cringe a bit then shake your head in dismay, or say “Nahhh, I’m not about that,” it would be an acceptable reaction to the idea of rubbing an oil all over your freshly cleansed skin and expecting any results other than greasiness. But in turns out facial oils have recently made their presence known in the skincare world as a secret to the healthier, glowy skin we all crave. Here’s the lowdown on how they work and why they’re worth the weirdness.
What is a facial oil and how does it work?
Basically, a facial oil is a formula created specifically for the face that is made up of one or more oils derived from natural ingredients like various plants, or fruit like avocados. Oils are extremely helpful in restoring some much needed hydration to your skin by way of essential fatty acids that can be found in the oils. Their work is two-fold. They protect the skin’s acid mantle and provide protection from external irritants, while also holding on to active ingredients (like the fatty acids) to give them time to penetrate deeper into the skin.
When Should I Use Them?
After cleansing your face, and before applying moisturizer. If your face is a bit damp, the oil will even work to hold some extra water on the skin to help it rebalance itself faster after your cleanser has messed with the acidity levels. In the more humid months I prefer to use an oil over a moisturizer, but in the dead of winter, the combination of both is priiiiiime.
Everyone. That means you too, oily skinned lassies. You’d think that the last possible thing you’d want to add to an already oily face would be, you know… oil. But, using these oils might actually be the secret to battling an over production of natural oils on your face. Ever wake up with a greasier face than normal even though you used a fairly drying cleanser the night before? When your skin doesn’t get replenished with natural oils and essential fatty acids post-cleansing, it goes into over production to try and fix the dryness faster — ergo, icky face. Nip that shit in the bud and be in control of the oil on yo face. If you’re hesitant, start with a seed oil. These penetrate extremely quickly and won’t leave a shine after application.
