#TBT: The Soundtrack To Your Life On July 30, 2005

Marien Richardson
Marien is a Brooklyn, NY native, hailing from the hard-knock streets of Park Slope. While earning her degree in Communications from American University, Marien got some real-life schooling as a waitress at the Cheesecake Factory. After college she swiftly returned to NYC and has been working as an events coordinator for over 3 years. As the daughter of two New York journalists, writing was always an innate skill for Marien. Her mix of compassion and sarcasm make for a fun and compelling read.

Can you believe that 2005 is already 10 years ago!!! Depending on how 20something you are, on this day in 2005 you were either spending your first night at sleep away camp, headed to your first summer job, or enjoying that bitter sweet summer between high school and college. Wherever you were, chances are you turned on your radio and one of these songs made your day.

1. Rihanna – Pon de Replay

Come on DJ, something pon de reply. Still have no idea what she’s saying and it really doesn’t matter. Who would have thought that the young singer from Barbados would eventually take over the music world? Well she did, and ever since her debut song was released on May 24, 2005, we’ve been heeding the command to “pon de replay.” In fact we played it again, and again, and again, all summer long.

2. Gwen Stefani – Hollaback Girl

This may be the best pop diss record ever. Created as a response to Courtney Love calling Stefani a “cheerleader,” Hollaback Girl was one of the most popular songs of 2005 teendom. All I know is for the rest of my life I never spelled the word banana normally ever again.

3. Weezer – Beverly Hills

Even though this song was released in March, it was still going strong by mid-summer, and of course it was! Where else do you want to be each summer other than living in Beverly Hills, hanging out at the Playboy mansion? Ironically enough, the mansion is actually located in the next town over, Holmby Hills. But who gives a damn! This song made you want to buck it all and hop on the next thing headed west.

4. Mariah Carey – We Belong Together

Was it really 10 years ago that Mimi was emancipated and you were singing this song to your crush’s yearbook picture? The song that revamped the glitter singer’s career has more writers than the Bible–including Carey herself, Jermaine Dupri, Manuel Seal, Johnta Austin and samples from Bobby Womack and The Deele’s songs from the 80s. Go ahead, push play and Instastalk your crush for a little while, we won’t judge.

5. The Pussycat Dolls feat. Busta Rhymes – Don’t Cha

I don’t know about you, but this song made me feel like the shit! The hot girl anthem topped the charts in 15 countries, and reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. You can’t go wrong with a song that gets the girls pumped up and feeling confident. You want to watch the video, don’t cha?

6. Lifehouse – You And Me

I just wanted the love of my life to show up on my fire escape with a boombox blasting this song! Seriously, was a more romantic, heart gripping love song ever created?! You be the judge, but my 15-year-old heart said no. The extended wedding version of the song was released on July 26, 2005 and I’m sure it made an appearance at every beach wedding that summer.

7. Missy Elliot feat Ciara and Fatman Scoop – Lose Control

If you and your best friends didn’t have a dance routine to this song, you didn’t get out enough as a kid. This song did exactly what it said, made us lose all control. Maybe time to break out the Adidas track suit and hit a sweet 16 to show these kids how it’s done!

8. Black Eyed Peas – Don’t Phunk With My Heart

I can’t be the only person that loved this song, even if it was only an excuse to say a near curse word around my parents. The break up denial tune reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and broke the top ten in most European countries.

9. Kelly Clarkson – Behind These Hazel Eyes

I challenge any woman to take a shower with this song on the radio and not belt out the lyrics with all types of emotion. After its release in April of 2005, the pop ballad spent 20 consecutive weeks in the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. It certainly spent 20 consecutive weeks on repeat on every broken hearted girl’s iPod.

10. Pretty Ricky – Grind With Me

This was the unapologetic sexy-time jam of the year, let alone the summer. This song often accompanied a late night whispered phone call to bae while your parents watched TV downstairs. The explicit version, Grind On Me, is sure to make you blush to this day.
