Legend has it that the start of winter is “cuffing season” — when people find somewhat tolerable significant others to Netflix and chill with when it’s too cold to go outside. But when the season ends and summer comes along, there’s the temptation to be single.
We shed our winter weight and look to warmer days to find new hookups and feel more confident to cast aside our so-so relationships.
Celebrities are no exception, as this week has seen the demise of three Instagram-favorite couples. And summer’s just getting started, people!
Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik
You know that friend you have who always SWEARS that she’s really done with her shitty boyfriend this time? She makes you come over with a bottle of wine while she cries and promises to block his number, then a week later, there they are, canoodling at a party. That’s Gigi and Zayn. Even their sources made sure to mention they’ve broken up before and will probably get back together again. Pity Taylor Swift, who will have to deal with Gigi’s sobbing phone calls for weeks to come. Look for Gigi and Zayn to get back together for a few tense dinner dates before Zayn makes the split as permanent as his one from One Direction.
How Heartbreaking?: 5 out of 10 crying emojis. Not together long enough to be a truly iconic couple, but it’s hard not to be sad that a couple this beautiful no longer exists.
Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris
Just a few months ago, they were Instagramming the type of lovey-dovey vacation pics that scream. “We’re fine! We’re totally in love! Who says we’re not?!” And while Calvin may have tweeted that they are moving on with love and respect, we say yeah-fucking-right. Was Calvin threatened by her success? Was she too innocent for him? Was there more to his recent car crash than we know? Was it Karlie Kloss?! IT WAS TOTALLY KARLIE KLOSS!!

Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama
Demi was a 17-year-old Disney star when this duo first started dating. Wilmer was that 30-year-old dude from That ‘70s Show. Somehow, despite plenty of cheating rumors and that creepy age difference, the pair lasted for six years. That’s forever by Hollywood standards. They even got kind of cute towards the end, with Demi discussing how he supported her during her mental health struggles. And now, with just a brief Instagram post, it’s no more. Did Demi, at the ripe old age of 23, get too old for him? We can only have our suspicions, but don’t be surprised to see Fez step out with a nice, wrinkle-free, 16-year-old starlet soon.
Sadness rating: 7/10. Age gap was weird as hell, but hey, six years had us believing that love could conquer all.
