So Fresh, So Clean: How To Stay Looking Naturally Refreshed For 12 Hours

Days are long and your makeup might have a habit of not wanting to take the night shift. Though I work a 9 to 5 (okay, 10 to 6) job, my days usually last around 12 hours. From the time I wake up until the time I get home, I like to look as together as possible despite how not together I might feel! I’m not just talking about up-keeping your mascara and lipstick – I’m talking a full beat.

I’ve been painting my face for as long as I can remember. I love makeup, I really do. With that has come a lot of lessons learned on what does and doesn’t work for maintaining an all-day look.

Wash your face

You can’t build a house without a strong foundation, and that goes along with your makeup, too. Your makeup is trying to lock itself onto the moisture of your skin, and not going along with a wash-and-moisturize routine rids yourself of that from the get-go. I have a very simple, though effective, routine: Cetaphil and Olay Complete All Day Moisturizer With SPF15. Incorporating sunscreen into your routine in some way saves you from those dreaded UV rays that can leave you wrinkling early.

Combine liquid and powder products

I used to think it was one or the other when applying makeup, but wow, was I wrong. I have combination skin, so using just powder meant it would fall right off. Using just liquid makeup made me look like I just ran a marathon in the middle of the day. I find that using liquid as a base and finishing off with powder has the same lock-down effect that results in a dewy look by the end of the day.

Brighten up

I swear by MAC’s Lip Erase. If there is anything I could come close to calling a secret weapon, this is it! By late afternoon, my dark circles are breaking through my concealer and the makeup around my mouth has gone astray from lunch and the multiple cups of coffee. This little pot of magic is a super-hydrating concealer that you can apply anywhere on your face without over-drying and makes you look brand new.

Drink water

An obvious one, but also one that is easily forgotten. Getting in 64 ounces is the ultimate goal, as it has proven health benefits. Remember that woman who said she took 10 years off her face by drinking three liters a day for a month? She reported on lighter under-eye circles and less blotchiness from making this simple change. Enough said.

Use toilet paper as blotter sheets

If you’re prone to looking a little oily mid-day, this is your new best friend. Rip off a square, separate it so you’re working with as thin as a piece of paper as possible, and go after your T-Zone.

Refresh with a finishing spray

When you find yourself running off to drinks or dinner with friends post-shift, it would be nice if your makeup bag could be your plus one. Since there’s no time to run home and back, Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water is your saving grace. Spritz a little bit onto the center and sides of your face and it will have you looking like you just stepped out of the house.
