If there’s one thing I love, it’s handbags. Balenciaga, Botkier, Foley & Corinna, Rebecca Minkoff, Marc Jacobs, Zac Posen — shall I go on? I could go either way when it comes to shoes, clothes, makeup, but I cannot help myself when it comes to a nice handbag. All my tax return money, bonuses etc. go straight to purses. Plus it’s something I carry everyday so I don’t mind spending $1 or $500 on a nice bag.
Alas, I’ve been in quite a pickle with my credit card(s) because of this habit, so I need to start controlling myself and finding alternatives to my expensive habit. Thus, I have created this guide to ballin’ on a budget.
Balenciaga Bleu Classic City Bag – $1,835
Now I personally own this bag and purchased it during a time of excess and confusion about my bank account. I was able to find a great deal on ebay and ended up paying about half of what the original bag was worth. For this one in particular, there really is no nice looking alternative so I personally decided to go for the real thing. HOWEVER, if you are looking for something with a similar look, feel and design, I would recommend the Botkier Trigger Satchel, which will only set you back $400 as opposed to $1,900.
I have set my mind on getting thing handbag. I’ve seen it twice in one week and therefore have taken it as a sign that I need to purchase it. Since this is a simple structured bag you can get a lot of different alternatives in many different colors. You can find both of these alternatives at Shopbop!
Rebecca Minkoff Unlined Tote – $275.00
Baggu Basic Tote – $160.00
Marc Jacobs Stam Bag – $1,395
Now I first spotted this bag back in ‘07 when I was too young to understand the value of a dollar and I’ve wanted it ever since. Unfortunately I can only find this on eBay because they might be discontinued. Lucky for me there are plenty of quilted alternatives out there.
Mossimo handbag from Target – $36.99
Rebecca Minkoff alternative – $130.00
Celine Micro Luggage Handbag – $2,900
I want this bag SO BADLY. In fact there are several from Celine that I want, including, but not limited to:
Small Cabas Phantom – $1,500
Medium Luggage Phantom – $3,400
These prices are just really out of my budget, like, no. I also have no business and no occasion to be walking around New York with a $3,000 handbag. Luckily, there are a lot of tote bags with this similar shape and style such as the ones below:
While these bags are not your average $15-$30 Urban Outfitters or Forever 21 bags, they are quality and stylish and won’t put you into serious debt. Now that I’m a grown up, I figure I can spend a little bit of money on treating myself. Plus they will last a long time AND most of them come with some sort of warranty or insurance covering damages. So go ahead and shop!
