NYC Foodie Handbook: @CoffeeNKegs’ Guide To Crafting The Perfect Summer Six-Pack

By now, summer is in full swing and those delusional New Year’s resolutions about getting in shape this year are far-gone. It’s a little too late to start hitting the gym to get that six-pack you’ve always wanted. Your weekend plans are filled with hanging out on the beach, pool parties and boat days. So if you can’t bring your washboard abs to the party — bring a glorious six-pack of beer.

Summer is the perfect time to experiment with different styles and flavors. Walk into your local craft beer shop and you will see: fruit infused shandies, citrus wheat beers, mango, watermelon, peach and tangerine IPAs — what the hell is an IPA?!?

Fortunately for you, I have been working tirelessly, day in and day out, pushing my liver to the limits. Booze, sweat and hangovers went into mastering my summer six-pack.

Starting with over 25 beers, I sat down with a couple of friends with varied interests in beer to make final cuts. My judges included: a friend whose beer scale was 1 to Bud Light, one who would rather be drinking vodka soda, and the last who is an overall alcohol enthusiast. Through deliberation and inebriation, we have perfected the art of assembling the best summer beers for any occasion.

Beers chicks will love, bros will complain it’s not bud light, and hipsters will respect.

So don’t be embarrassed to take off your shirt at the next pool party, because people will see you for who you really are — A craft beer scholar who likes to party!

These are the top craft beers you need to try before summer ends.

1. Sixpoint Brewery: Jammer (NY)

Gose-style ale brewed with sea salt and coriander

ABV: 4.2%

Perfect for: Hanging out on the beach – salt in the air, your hair, and beer? What may seem to be an odd pairing works perfectly in a light, salty, slightly sour, and easy to drink beer.

2. Ballast Point Brewery: Grapefruit Sculpin (CA)

Grapefruit IPA

ABV: 7%

A twist on Ballast Point’s award-winning IPA. The tart freshness of the grapefruit cuts the bitterness of a classic IPA. Resulting in a smooth flavorful beer that pairs well with food. Grab a few for your next cookout.

3. Bell’s Brewery: Oberon (MI)

American wheat ale

ABV: 5.8

This wheat ale is your All-American classic summer beer. With the color and scent of a sunny afternoon, it will be a hit at any summer occasion.

4. Uinta Brewing Co: Hop Nosh Tangerine IPA (UT)

Tangerine IPA

ABV: 7.3%

Higher percentage of alcohol than the rest of the pack, this IPA is deliciously balanced in flavor highlighting a wonderful aroma and taste of tangerines. Drink a few of these before going out and you will be buzzing from flavor.

5. Victory Brewing Co: Summer Love (PA)

Golden/blonde ale

ABV: 5.2%

This beer is a thirst quencher, and as the name suggests the taste will remind you of falling in love during those long days of summer. The perfect beer for all things summer, reminds me of the ideal beer to enjoy during a baseball game.

6. Brew Hub: Keybilly (FL)

Amber Ale with Key Lime Juice

ABV: 5.4%

This “Island Ale” tastes like a cold slice of key lime pie in a bottle. Sounds weird?!? – However, it’s easy drinking with the sweetness of the key lime juice and nice graham cracker crust finish. Perfect for a day in the sun – especially enjoyed poolside.
