I work at what some would call a “tech startup.” We have a game room, we get massages every Friday and people walk around in blankets (mainly me).
I regularly wear sneakers to work, and the most makeup I can fathom wearing is a heavy coat of mascara. I don’t like waking up early to put on makeup, I don’t like the feeling of things on my face, I personally believe it’s bad for your skin to wear foundation every day and I prefer to spend money on other things like organic lotion and burritos. Hence, why I embarked on this seven day makeup challenge (if you can call it that).
Here is what happened.
Umm…good thing I remembered that in order to put effort into your appearance you actually need time to do so (aka I need to wake up earlier). Today, I wore my glasses and a nice layer of Aveeno sunscreen on my face. In other words, I failed miserably.
I did wake up earlier this day, but then I realized I didn’t know what to do besides mascara and eyeliner. So I guess this would also be a fail. What do people wear on their face when they put on makeup? Do I need to wear blush? What does blush actually do for me? I already have color in my face, so is it really necessary?
Today I actually did try and wore coffee brown MAC eyeliner, L’oreal mascara and Chanel lipgloss.
Third time’s the charm. TODAY WAS THE DAY — or at least I think it was. I woke up earlier and actually tried to get my face together. I also realized I don’t know what I’m doing and don’t have a lot of products. But give me points for trying.
I filled in my eyebrows (cause I have zero eyebrows) with the coffee brown brow pencil. I put some Sephora gold eyeliner on top of that, mascara, lip primer, lipstick, urban decay eyeshadow and MAC tinted moisturizer.
Does this suffice? I don’t know, I’ll be taking a poll of some make up wearing friends to see if I passed the test. Either way, this is hard and I don’t like doing it. I want my extra five minutes in bed. Maybe I’ll switch up the eyeshadow/eyeliner colors? Do I try contouring? I don’t know how to do that, BUT I would love to contour my cheekbones to be less, if that makes sense.
I woke up this morning and it looked as if I hadn’t slept in five whole years so I pulled out the big guns today. I wore MAC foundation under my eyes, two types of eyeliner — black and a frosty blue — AND two types of mascara — Wet n Wild (which I love) and Black Black L’Oreal. I also curled my lashes and wore lip gloss.
I was a smart cookie and pre-planned not only what I was going to be wearing, but what I was going to be putting on my face as well. Once again, I went with two eyeliners, which I really love doing because you can play around with more colors. I also used two mascaras because, of course, filled in my eyebrows and lip gloss + lipstick.
I was riding on the train with a guy friend of mine and I was looking around at all the people, in particular their faces. I told him about my makeup challenge and he looked at me a little crazy mostly because he knows I don’t wear makeup.
Then I realized if a girl has a pimple or thinks she looks tired she puts on pounds of makeup to try and “make herself look better,” but if a guy has bad acne or didn’t get enough sleep the night before, he rolls out of bed and proceeds as is about his business.
Why is this? Society, yes, but why?
The fact that I even did a makeup challenge in the first place is something a man would never do. Granted, I love playing around with different lipsticks and eyeshadows and doing a fierce cat eye every now and again. But I shouldn’t have to make myself presentable for anybody but Jesus on the day I die. So on this day before I went out I put on three types of mascara, filled in my eyebrows and wore lip gloss.
Really? I discontinued the challenge and wore a huge smile on my face all day long.
