If You’re Not Side Hustling You’re Doing It Wrong

The struggle is real, my dear millennials. While we’re all just trying to make enough money to pay our rent and make ends meet, we still need that extra cash for our side hobbies. These, of course, include eating brunch every Sunday and drinking to excess every day. (You may actually need an intervention if that happens every day). So how can we go about making some extra cash in a side hustle that doesn’t involve illegal activity? And is it really worth it to do so?

Instead of wasting your precious time stalking your friend’s friend’s girlfriend on Instagram, make better use of your free time to hustle and flow like the best of the best (Ludacris style).

Use your crafting skills to create and sell items on the internet

Not only can a side hustle improve your bank account, it can also help you tap into those unknown skills that you may not be using in your current profession. Are you an artist but can’t afford living on an artist’s salary? Then create mosaics on the sideline and sell them on websites like Etsy, which was basically created for curating and selling authentic, original items around the world. Anything you can think of people will create and sell on Etsy, including clothes, jewelry, wooden planks, etc.

Can you sing? Belt out some tunes during open mic nights

What about music? Are you a wistful rapper busting beats in your mother’s basement? Are you soulfully singing tunes in the shower like Adele? Or, are you a comedic visionary telling jokes to your lone self in the mirror? Then try out one of the many open mic nights New York City (or all cities) have to offer. Even if it doesn’t pay well, at the very least it helps you gain a fan base that will make you feel validated in real life rather than on social media.

Earn some gift cards and extra cash by participating in surveys or selling some of your old stuff

If you’re just looking to make some extra moolah, then take some time out of your day for the very real side hustle of taking surveys, mystery shopping, or selling fancy, exclusive items that you no longer want in your small apartment. I am a part of multiple survey-taking websites, and have earned Express gift cards, Amazon gift cards, and $100’s in cold hard cash. No scams, no gimmicks. Although, it can take at least a year until your money comes rolling in, it’s better than no money rolling in a year from now. Here are some websites I’ve used before.

Mystery shopping

Mystery shopping has earned me a total of $15 in the past year, but hey, the hustle is a hustle for a reason. Try these shops if you’re into “pretending to want a cell phone” but have no intention of buying one.

Obviously, EBay, Craigslist, and those pesky Cash for Gold locations are always a solid resort if you need to sell something fast and earn immediate cash, but sometimes, the hustle can also be found by selling used clothing. Buffalo Exchange is an awesome store with multiple locations around the city in which you can sell your clothing for cash money or store credit, and then spend it buying other clothes people have sold for cash money. What goes around comes around in the life of a hustler.
