Ahh the children of the 90s — we seem to hold our decade in a higher regard than any of the generations before us do theirs. And why shouldn’t we? Flannels, ripped jeans, teenage angst, Empire Records, and Dunkaroos — this decade had it all.

The 90s were a force to be reckoned with, and so is the generation it spawned. From our sharp-tongues to our unapologetic in-your-face ‘tudes, we really are a legacy, and the ten songs below are right off our soundtrack.

From melodies forever ingrained in our heads to lyrics that speak to our souls, the songs below not only helped shape who we are today, but carry us on from one moment to the next.

Also some of these tunes are just really great reminders that life sucks sometimes so STFU and stop whining.

1. TLC – Waterfalls

The lesson: Play it safe, not stupid.

Key lyric:

“Don’t go chasing waterfalls, please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re used to. I know that you’re gonna have it your way or nothing at all
But I think you’re moving too fast.”

2. Des’ree – You Gotta Be

The lesson: See each obstacle as a welcomed challenge.

Key lyric:

“Time asks no questions it goes on without you, leaving you behind if you can’t stand the pace. The world keeps on spinning can’t stop it if you try to, this time it’s danger staring you in the face.”

3. The Wallflowers – One Headlight

The lesson: Don’t live your life in the shadows.

Key lyric:

“Come on try a little, nothing is forever. There’s got to be something better than in the middle.”

4. No Doubt – Just A Girl

The lesson: Watch out universe, here comes the millennial female.

Key lyric:

“I’ve had it up to here. Am I making myself clear?”

5. The Lion King – The Circle of Life

The lesson: The world is really big and we are really small and insignificant.

Key lyric:

“There’s far too much to take in here, more to find than can ever be found. But the sun rolling high through the sapphire sky keeps great and small on the endless round.”

6. The Offspring – Self Esteem

The lesson: The more you treat people like shit, the more they want you.

Key lyric:

“Now I know I’m being used, that’s okay man, I like the abuse.”

7. Alanis Morissette – Ironic

The lesson: Life is full of a fuck-ton of inconveniences that you will never see coming, but be on the look out and never get too cozy.

Key lyric:

“And life has a funny way of helping you out when you think everything’s gone wrong and everything blows up in your face.”

8. Smash Mouth – All Star

The lesson: Hey 90s kids, you are a rare breed of awesome. Be rule breakers, be rockstars — but if you choose the latter then for the love of god make better music than we do.

Key lyric:

“Only shooting stars break the mold.”

9. Hanson – MMMBop

The lesson: Most of the people in your life right now don’t actually give a fuck about you.

Key lyric:

“You have so many relationships in this life, only one or two will last. You go through all the pain and strife, then you turn your back and they’re gone so fast.”

10. New Radicals – You Get What You Give

The lesson: Your life, your rules. You’re in control here, because you’re a 90s kid and you inherently kick ass.

Key lyric:

“This whole damn world can fall apart, you’ll be OK, follow your heart.”
