Our twenties is a decade full of freedom and potential opportunities, unlike any other stretch of years in our lives. We are independent and freethinking adults, and for many of us, it is a time where we can unselfishly put ourselves first. Our ties with our parents are loosened and our lives begin to shift in the directions we want or need to pursue.
We’re discovering the ability to fund our own happiness, making this the perfect time to strive towards doing things that may not be able to do later on in life.
Use this time wisely and check off these seven to-do items that every 20something should experience before heading into that next decade of life:
1. Fill your passport with as many stamps as possible
Not only will it get harder to travel because of the increasing amount of responsibilities that arise when you getting older, but the wisdom and worldliness that comes with experiencing other cultures is something every 20something would benefit from.
2. Spend time with friends every chance you get
Finding the time to see your friends after college starts to get more difficult as some of your closest friends get married, have children and move around. Now is the time to cement the friendships that you will sustain for the rest of your life.
3. Land a job you actually enjoy
It may take a few years and setbacks, but all of us should strive to find a job in our 20s that we enjoy. Too often 20somethings settle for their current situation, then push of reaching their goal until they’re 30 or older. It’s not impossible to enjoy what you do during your early years. Know your worth and don’t get too passive in your career.
4. Drive cross country
While road trips can get pretty costly, the value that comes with getting a real sense of our country and breaking the stigma that you must travel abroad to get the “real” travel experience is priceless. It’s a great way to potentially discover a new city or area you may want to live in. It may take a substantial amount of time to complete, but it’s worth it if you can carve out the time.
5. Live somewhere new
For most of us, we have spent our whole lives rooted in or near our hometown. Our 20s are the perfect time to move somewhere new and use that experience to grow as a person. And if it doesn’t work out, there is usually some place for you to return home to.
6. Be the healthiest version of yourself
Make your health a priority in your 20s. From developing a steady workout routine to eating healthier, these early health habits will stick with you for the rest of your life.
7. Get to know yourself thoroughly
This will hopefully come naturally as you move through life, but make sure you remain aware of how you cope with growing up. What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? Who do you strive to be, and what will it take to get there? This is a span of years that will prepare us for even more complicated times that we’re unable to foresee right now — so make sure you know yourself inside and out.
