We all have them, but not all legs were created equal. Whether you have a particularly talented pair, or a pair that leaves a lot to be desired, they can always be worked on. However, only some of us take this call to leg duty seriously. But really, who doesn’t want a nice pair of legs to show off next summer? If you really need more convincing, here are five reasons why you shouldn’t skip leg day and how you can get that leg exercise everywhere you go.
1. Avoid having “chicken legs”
Unless you enjoy being tagged in every single spongebob photo on Instagram, it’s in your best interest to be best friends with the squat rack.
Workout: Start off with bodyweight squats every day, until you feel comfortable enough to try it with weights.
2. Build a strong foundation for your body
Some of your most powerful muscle groups are in your legs — glutes, quads, hip flexors, hamstrings and calves. They contribute to your overall structural foundation, and without working on them, you may just crumble in old age.
Workout: If you can’t make it to the gym, try doing walking lunges at home to hit as many of those muscle groups as possible.
3. Strong legs = strong brain
This study is tackling the theory that getting enough leg exercise will ease degenerative brain function when you reach your silver years.
4. Get those buns of steel and get rid of the fluff
Almost everyone is a fan of nice glutes. It’s hard not to appreciate all of the hard work that goes into building an aesthetically pleasing permanent seat cushion.
Workout: Throw a few sets of squat jumps in between your strength exercises to really shock the muscle.
5. Be comfortable pants-free all the time
Whether you’re gearing up for NYC’s next underwear subway ride or you’re anticipating a beautiful pants-free summer, having a solid leg routine will give you the confidence to shed 75 percent of that inseam.
Seriously, don’t skip leg day.
